It’s National Family Literacy Day!

Do you know a reluctant or struggling reader? Or a new English-language learner? Comics or graphic novels are a great way to get them motivated to read. The pictures help with comprehension, and having fewer words on a page is much less intimidating than seeing a huge block of text.

The Baby Mouse series by brother-and-sister team Matthew Holm and Jennifer Holm is perfect–easy to read, and funny and engaging enough to keep kids wanting the next book. And there are a lot of them–everything from Babymouse: Queen of the World to Babymouse: Rock Star to Babymouse: Cupcake Tycoon. The most recent–and perfect for election time–is Babymouse for President. The (mostly) pink series with silver accents is meant to attract girls, of course, but I work in a middle school library and can attest that boys enjoy these book just as much as girls do!

And like all the best kids’ books, they’re also entertaining for adults, which makes them perfect for family reading! What better way to encourage literacy?
