What is the relationship between girls and comics? Love? Hate? Indifference? (In my case it’s love.)

While female comic book readers may not be rare, they certainly have a lower profile than male readers. Comic store shelves are dominated by superhero action fare, not by romance, humor, or slice-of-life. Since these genres have no difficulty gaining readers in traditional prose, why do these types of comic books suffer from such a lower profile? I hope to explore this market segment with everyone who’s interested in publishing comics.

I’m also volunteering in a middle school library 3 hours a day, 3 days a week, and keeping a close eye on the comics collection.

This blog is a project for the Narratives and Networks class in the University of Washington’s Master of Communication in Digital Media program.
